Promoted to GS-12 January 2012

To close a magnificant year and to inaugurate the next I have been promoted to GS-12 effective the 1st of January. This merit promotion follows an annual evaluation with maximum scores. The new year will continue in the effort to professionalize the work of the safety organization. Together with the core team of the safety office, we have developed a vision of world class safety and set out an aggressive strategy to be recognized throughout the Department of Defense as a model for industrial safety.

Quarterly Quality Award August 2011

The Corpus Christi Army Depot has an award to recognize quality performance. I was one of two awardees this quarter. CCAD employees over 4000 federal civilians and carries an additional 2000 private contractors. The award was given to recognize both my work in Lean Six Sigma and in Safety Management. At the same time I was receiving the award our Safety program was given an extensive, frontpage article in the CCAD magazine in which I was quoted several times. See the story here (page one).

Army Write Up on LSS Project May 2011

The Lean Six Sigma project has been extremely well received and recognized. A full page article describing the project was published in the Corpus Christi Army Depot Aircraftsman magazine. A copy of the magazine is here, go to page 9. In addition to the article, the project is being recommended for a federal award for excellence and one component is even being adopted as a best practice. The project  was reviewed by a peer team of black belts, a master black belt and an enterprise master black belt as the last step toward achieving Army LSS certification.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) April 2011

Protecting the wokforce of a world class industry can be a world class nightmare in providing all the different levels of personal protection needed. Today my Lean Six Sigma team completed its project to control cost and provide an efficient means of acquiring PPE. The team used a toolbox full of project management skills in problem solving to generate a multi-year multi-million dollar financial benefit to the US Army while improving access to the PPE needed to perform work operations. The team's accomplishment will be recognized in an upcoming Army publication.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt September 2010

A four month program in Lean Six Sigma was completed on September 25th. This was in conjunction with the Army training program toward full black belt certification. My project team has been working on solving a program cost over-run that has been growing annually at an unjustifiable rate. The project team has made a tremendous effort in all phases of the project and expects to conclude the final hand off ahead of schedule and with a cost savings of over one million dollars.

OSHA VPP Audit March 2010

An intensive week long audit was capped by stellar results (stellar as in STAR status, get it?) The team of OSHA and SGE auditors returned a report with 8 recommendations, zero merit recommendations (for 1-year corrective action), zero 90-day items (for corrective action), and 129 closed discrepencies. Every auditor expressed their pleasant surprise at how well Corpus Christi Army Depot was managing the safety program and the level of participation in safety by all employees. The report has been sent to the VPP Region VI director for final review before submittal to the Secretary of Labor for official signature awarding Star Site status. The VPP Star designation is held by less than 1% of US industrial operations and sets a benchmark for other industries to model their safety programs after. More information about VPP can be found at www.osha.gov.

Published in Knowledge Magazine November 2009 Issue

An article I wrote for the Army safety magazine, Knowledge,  will be printed in the November volume. The paper addresses ways that a workgroup leader can assess the safety climate and gives a few pointers on what to do with that information. View the full November issue of Knowledge magazine.
